Something About Locks
A lock is a device that can be electronic or mechanical and in order to unlock it you need some kind of an object which is usually a key, nut may also be a fingerprint, a keycard or a kind of a security token. There are various types of locks - deadbolts, padlocks, lever handle locks, knob locks and many others. However, there is another more general categorization of locks and one of the main categories to which many of the narrow types belong are the basic locks.
Basic locks are also the ones that are most usually found at hardware stores as well as some other shops which are not really specialized for locksmithing. The reason why they are called basic locks is because the protection they can provide is not special and lock picks can easily pick or bypass them. They can do it simply applying the force the action of which is called 'raking' or they can do it in a more 'sophisticated' way by using lock picking tools and in this case, it is called 'lifting'. However, whether a person is skillful in picking or not, they can easily defeat the lock.
The weakest and the least reliable of the basic locks is considered to be the 'wafer' lock. Picking of this lock does not require any special skill at all. All you need is to use a bit more of your energy and bump it - it is as simple as that.
Further on, it is known that the majority of locks - if not all - that are implemented in office products (i.e. cabinets, desks, luggage...) belong to the class of basic locks. Since a basic lock does not really provide any kind of protection, these products, especially the equipment that is purchased through a catalogue, may easily be opened in a very short time. Thus, they provide no security at all and such locks are definitely not suitable for those who want to secure their businesses.
Unfortunately, the basic locks are the ones that make the majority of the locks that are available in the ordinary stores whether they are hardware specialized or not. This is a very concerning fact since it implies that a large number of not only offices, but residential buildings as well, are not properly secured and can be easily broken into.
To sum up, although basic locks are the most used and the simplest to implement, they are not really safe. In fact, they do not provide almost any security at all. They can easily be picked or bypassed and they can be defeated with a simple bump which makes even a beginner capable of breaking into a facility or piece of furniture such as a desk or a cabinet. Thus, basic locks should definitely be replaced with more reliable ones. This article, therefore, serves as a means to raise people's awareness of this issue and in that way enable them to protect themselves and their possessions properly, with a reliable lock.
